Recently i was called to take care of some water heater problems. When I got to the residence and was able to take a look at the issue I realized that these water heater problems  were simpler then people thought.

Here is a simple troubleshooting article to help with simple gas water heater problems or electric water heater problems. So today we are going to talk about how to troubleshoot your water heater.

Primarily there are two basic types of water heaters that are in use – gas water heater and electric water heater.

Let’s talk about gas water heater first.

If you do not have hot water there are some things that you can check right away.

First thing you want to do is remove cover plate on the bottom of your water heater. Most of the water heaters operate off a pilot light. There is a small window you should see once you remove the cover plate. Look down in there and you should see is a “glow” down in there.

If you do not see a “glow” through the window it means that your pilot light has gone out. Most of gas water heaters are equipped with an igniter so if that happens then what you want to do is rotate your control knob to the off position and let it set for probably about 30 seconds.

After you do that want to rotate it back to the pilot position, the knobs should be clearly marked (pilot position and on position). Once you rotate control knob to the pilot position and line it up with the front there is a cut out that allows you to depress red button. Depress that red button and then  snap the igniter until you can see that “glow” while looking down in the inspection window.

Once that happens then you will rotate the unit back to the on position and check to make sure that your pilot light is on. Once you do that (especially if the water has been on) you should automatically hear your igniter come on.

With an electric water heater what commonly happens is that a breaker might get thrown off. Then you want to locate your main breaker box and you want to find the circuit breakers for your electric water heater. It should be clearly labeled in there.

You can pop those off and then reset them. Most of the time that’s all you have to do for your electric water heater problems.

If those simple things do not work and you can’t get your electric water heater working you may have a malfunctioning electric water heater or you may have more serious problem.

You might need to call your plumbing professional to check out for you. But in short that’s how you troubleshoot your electric or gas water heater.
